I have taken to marking the side I don't want to show before I cut it. Then, whichever side I don't want will always be visible. I take a soft pencil, hold it kind of at a low angle and make squiggle lines down the whole length, about 6 to 8 inches apart. Then most pieces I cut will have a little of the pencil mark on the back. That light mark will wash out, but won't show anyway.

Another way to figure it out, is to hold it up to the machine light and move it around a little. Usually, I can see the "paint" by doing that.

And I have some quilts with pieces in the wrong way. Only I know where they are and only if I really look for them, so I think it is no big deal. LOL
