I trim the batting back so it doesn't get caught in the seam forming a thickness. This is when I use the basting spray to make sure the batting doesn't shift along the edges. I use masking tape to get it to lay flat and then use pins so the sandwich doesn't shift. I stitch around the outside at about an 1/8". These placemats were all birthed.
