I must be doing every thing wrong then. I use the Mono Poly monofilament thread, which is really a fine thread, thinner than my other threads, and very soft.
I leave my tension on normal, and use a universal needle (probably 80/12 or 14).
I use either cotton or polyester in the bobbin.
I do use a thread stand and a thread wrap, which I think is really needed with the fine soft thread. I tape a safety pin on the machine to use as an additional thread guide.
I fmq all the time using the above. I am sewing on an old Kenmore which is literally falling apart in places, but it doesn't give me fits when I fmq.
My personal opinion is that every machine, every sewist/seamstress is different. What works for me may or may not work for someone else.
