For example, if you choose a two-color mix for each two blocks, you will be happy with those two next to each other. But what about the third block in that row? I think this is an excellent suggestion. Sometimes secondary patterns show when more blocks/units are added and then one needs to rethink the whole thing.
As of now, I like #3 the least, but that could change when you have more blocks/units laid out.
I like the two color combinations like you have them in #2 - but I would vary the combinations so that no two of them had the same colors in them.
