Follow-up on "Questions on old Singer"

I cleaned the Singer 66 up, oiled it, and got it working smoothly and perfectly. Love sewing on it. On recommendation of someone I used machine oil on it to bring out the luster and now wonder if that was a good idea as it seems that maybe the decals are rubbing off a bit. For all you experts out there, is there anything like a shellac that I could put on it to preserve it or do you have any other suggestions for me. Guessing the oil may not have been the best advice. Thanks for any help you can give me and I so wish I would have asked this question before listening to someone else. Sharon
