You cannot copy the pattern and sell or give away a copy of it. The actual pattern you can do what you want with it. If you think it's okay, I suggest telling a designer you plan to copy and make the pattern free.
It was the way the OP worded it...but in context, she meant that the purchaser of a paid for pattern cannot make multiple copies of that purchased pattern and "share it" with friends. Of course, she can take that pattern that she purchased and wrap it up, put a bow on it and give it to her best friend for a birthday present.
Can you the OP clarify? What happened that caused this post? Did someone offer a bunch of copyrighted patterns "for free" to people here? The mods try to make sure it doesn't happen here at all.
