I think it depends on whether you are going to use it as a blanket or not. If you will be under it at night (especially if 2 people will be under it), I make it a bit larger so you don't get uncovered in the middle of the night. If it's just for show, I think going a bit farther than the box spring an adding a dust ruffle is a nice look.
