I think the purpose of the software is quilt and block design. If you design a whole quilt (filling it in with the blocks and colors/fabrics you will use, it will tell you how much fabric you need.
If you Google fabric yardage charts, you can get free charts telling you how much fabric is required for squares, strips etc.
