Default I need help please !

I am working on a Jenny Doan tute that is coins with pizzazz. I didn't pay enough attention and cut the strips that surround the block the same size as the 4 in the middle of the block, 2 1/2 inches.

I went back because, when I put it on my design wall it was all off, lines didn't meet, etc. I watched it again and Jenny said to cut the side strips 2 inches instead of the 2 1/2 inches. I have it all sewn to the sides but for the life of me I can't figure out how much to cut off the side strips to bring it back to the 2" instead of 2 1/2"

Do I measure the strips from the back where they are already sewn and count out what to get the 2" and won't that make it 1 1/2" on each side? I said I was confused and need someone to hold my hand through this and tell me, when I put a ruler on the edge of the sewn end, how far out to I measure to cut the strip off so I'll eventually end up with a real square?

I'm confusing myself as I'm writing this so if you're confused, you should see me :-(
