I have birthed many table runners this fall this way-1-lay the batting on a flat surface-2-put the backing fabric right side up on top of batting-3-then lay the quilt top with right side down--4-stitch all the way around but leave a small opening to turn it right side out. Before turning right side out, trim the batting as close to the seam as you can and then trim backing and top to 1/4 to 3/8th width--turn and poke out the corners--press well and pin well before doing any quilting on it. Hope this helps solve your problem.
