I don't birth quilts too often. I usually do it for placemats. I do trim that batting a 1/4" on each side so that when I spray baste the batting to the top, I can barely catch a bit of batting when stitch my seam allowance. If you put it on the bottom, the backing has a tendency to show because the batting is pressing it out.
