You do not need to hold the button, simply place the blade, push forward, the guard moves on its own to cut then closes automatically when you lift the cutter. There is a safety lock so make sure you haven't locked it so it isn't opening for you.
Thank you! That is what I was missing. I thought this was like my Olfa ergonomic rotary cutter.
