I could be wrong but it seems to me that the 80s were a time of some real low quality. Not just sewing machines but a lot of things. (Chrysler K cars and Ford Escorts come to mind). The "how can we build this cheaper?" mentality was in full force. I've had a couple 80s sewing machines and noticed they were noisier and not built near as well as my older ones.
