Yeah, you are right, the kit itself costs less than the fuel would cost you, and an 18 hour drive -- that's a rough drive!

On the main page of the reproduction, the guy talks about how his dimensions became so perfect - there was a gal who disassembled hers and traced all of the pieces on vellum. That's way more valuable than the cost of the plans or the kit because you know it's to scale and the dimensions are right. I'll take that over sneaking up on the shapes any day.
It would have been 18 hours each way, and that's assuming I didn't get turned around a few times. I bet I couldn't do it in less than 4 days and more likely a week for me. So that's a week of hotels and road snacks too. I bet the kit would cost me less.
