Have had a Bernina w/ knee lift for 20 years and used it... Twice? Others I know love it and wouldn't be without. I think it is true that they are very helpful for machine applique.
I'm looking forward to hearing how your trip went!
I have been using a Bernina 1031 for the last 23 years, it has the knee lift, I use it all the time. When I switch to another machine, I find myself looking for it. Have fun with your "test drive".
Last year I bought a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.2, I really, really like the IDT(built in walking foot); 10" throat space for quilting. It has the knee lift, however it works differently than the Bernina's does; it doesn't need the knee lift as the machine works the same without it. The 4.2 has no presser foot lifter, its all computerized.
Its funny when I sew with a treadle and I'm looking for the button that puts the foot down.
