I think you may be referring to the
pyramids border. You achieve the depth (3D) by using dark, medium, and light or 3 different shades or tints.

Thank you for the reference, but that is not it. It is a black and white 9-patch, unless it is a black and white 4-patch. The size of the patch (black) on the outside is larger than the size of the black patch on the side next to the center and it forms a slanted pattern. The same with the white patches.
