to extend it, why not do the 4 patch in yellow and black and alternate them with a fussy cut tractor. Then finish with the same size little borders of the black/yellow/white (reversed) on the outside. If you made this border 6" and the colored border same size as other (i assume they are 1"-2" wide) you will increase the size by about 18". This should be plenty big for him to snuggle under.
