My GD (age 8) has just learned to handle a machine this past year. I had her sew on one telephone page and she did very well. After re-reading Ditter's tut, I think I will have her sew these strings onto fleece and use it as a QAYG. I'm also thinking of just having her sew it vertical (rather than corner to corner) and if the pattern screams diagonal, maybe set on point. Also, Bonnie Hunter is famous for string quilts and has lots of free patterns, may look for more ideas there.
