I have borrowed DH's also. We now keep a few of them in the sewing room. they work great if the mechanism under your table is wider than some of the other clamps. His are metal and he paid more for them but I like the fact I can adjust them so easily.

These are on sale at harbor freight right ( tool store) now for 1.99.
For sandwiching a quilt on a table for basting most people use large binder clips.
My husband suggested these ( he had some in his shed) because you can adjust them
a great deal for size.
I was thinking about going to get some of them. I tried one out on my table and they hold very securely and lock and unlock.
What do you think?
