I read an article about making your own color catcher for the washer. The article said to melt a small quantity (I believe it was about 1/8 to 1/4 cup) of washing soda (I found mine in the laundry aisle at Walmart) in a gallon of water. Then, take a yard of muslin or white cotton fabric and soak in the solution until saturated. Then, wring out lightly and hand to dry. As you wash new fabrics, just cut a section (approx. 6" x 6") and throw in with your washer load and it is supposed to 'grab' the loose dye in the water. I haven't tried this yet but it sounds so much cheaper than buying the pre-made color catchers.
