Your friend's suggestion of an X in the print squares is not bad. You could try a kind of swirly design in the yellow strips, starting from where it meets the two print squares, swirl toward the opposite edge of the strip, and then back toward the endpoint of the strip. It makes a nice counterpoint to the geometric shape of the X. Just an idea.
