Default Machine quilting - Restarting a seam

I am a hand quilter but have had to resort to machine quilting to complete a deadline. My problem is, when I unpicked a seam (and there have been a few occasions but I won't go into the sorry details) I really don't know how to resume the line without making a complete hash of it. I tried threading a needle and burying the end knot which worked fairly well, but putting it back in the machine to start the line again has resulted in an uneven and, in my opinion, a worse scenario than if I had left it crooked, although in one instance I had caught the back so it had to be unpicked. Any recommendations on how best to go about this.
