and figuring I had nothing to loose, I opened it up. The Merritt was made around 1980 and was produced in the Singer factory in Brazil. There is a nylon gear located behind the reverse mechanism that broke a few teeth off the metal gear holder. I found the gear on e-bay and fixed the unit
About 2 months ago, my sister asked if I would donate a machine to an organization that teaches children and young adults the skill of sewing. I readied the 2404 with the case, cams and original owners manual and I understand it is being put to good use in it's new home.
