when you start moving the pile around, you will see nice combos. I agree with the others in using one or two base colors (perhaps a light denim blue and a warm medium brown). These would blend but provide a contrast. I say to use whatever pattern you are comfortable with. Your friend is going to be overjoyed with whatever you make. What a wonderful thing for you to do.
