I always use a quilt on my dining table when my family comes to visit. Since my grandchildren are young, I cover the quilt with clear plastic. I use a clear shower curtain cut to size since I don't have a local place to buy clear plastic on a roll. I use very thin batting. I've also used a sheet for a cloth under the quilt like in my chicken quilt.
