I had the same problem with my latest UFO (3" short in my case). I had no more fabric (knew that when I was cutting it, because I was using the scraps from the backing). I had 2 pieces left - long enough, but only 1.5"-2" wide. So I joined them along the long edge, trimmed to 2.5" with the seam 1/4" offset from center, pressed it, and added that to my binding with the seam on the inside. No one will ever know but me. And everyone this thread

I still don't understand how 4 strips of fabric, each 6" longer than the square quilt, didn't make it all the way around the quilt. I guess mitred corners and 45 degree joins use more fabric than I thought.
