Sounds as if the button holes are just too big, you can shorten them by taking needle & thread ( or use small zigzag on machine) and stitching at each end to make them shorter. Easy fix.
Yes, as, I did think if that..or larger buttons too! I'll try the easy fix first, then see what happens
