I guess I don't get the need to secure the thread on the bobbin - I store 'not-being-used' bobbins in a little box (a box that came with Christmas cards I purchased at Barnes and Noble that has an attached lid - like an old cigar box). I keep it next to my machine. Grab a bobbin when I need it. I store empty are partially full ones in this box. I suppose if I were taking multiple bobbins out of the house I might consider the tube...but that has yet to happen.

Spools of thread I do secure the ends: I purchased some Hugo 'Amazing' Reusable Tape and wrap open spools. I put all the spools in boxes I purchased at Michael's - the photograph boxes. (Lots of decorative ones available - and they go on sale often.) They have a little holder on the front of the box where you can put a label if you want. When looking for thread - I open the lid and they are all standing there saying 'pick me'!

You can also use the Hugo tape to 'wrap' a bobbin to a spool. Very cool stuff.
