Maybe it would help to take him a casserole or a pie? And, I guess being honest about why you're there will help, but you can still take time to connect with him a bit. Maybe go with your dad but while you're there, invite your uncle to dinner. "It would be nice to see more of you, Uncle." kind of thing. (And mean it, follow through with it.)
