I would treat each sampler block as an individual. Amanda Murphy has some good ideas in her books on this, plus there's a book on FMQ that uses about 5 basic shapes (i.e. C, S, etc) and has you combine these into a continuous line design within the block. Go to the APQS website and check Dawn Cavanugh's articles on how to quilt the quilt--she's done an article that was in one of the magazines (F & P??) on how to do continous line quilting on rows of FG, too.
