I use spray adhesive to attach fabric to cardboard, then hand it to my daughter with the lovely handwriting. She writes in pencil the who/from/date I take it off the cardboard attach a stabilizer then set the stitches to fine and just follow the lines I then needle turn and attach to quilt.
