The appliques are fused with Heat 'n' Bond Lite and then stitched with a blanket stitch. LOTS of turning and twisting of the quilt, so did them in three horizontal sections, without borders on. Had to stop stitching at the "trunk" of the tree limbs that extended into the borders, until the whole quilt was put together though. It was do-able but you really had to think ahead. In the middle section I left the top of the tree off, until the first two horizontal sections were together, then fused it on and stitched. Hope this explains a bit better.
