I agree that the choice of fabrics is what distinguishes a manly quilt (or gender neutral).
The wedding quilt (couch throw) that I'm doing now is one I would consider gender neutral because of the woodsy look.
You can see it in the pictures section "Wedding quilt for a friend".
The blocks alternate rail fence and 4 patch or 9 patch. Very easy! I just kept adding borders till it was big enough as I no longer had more of all the fabrics.

The post is actually titled "quilt for a friend's wedding"
