You live in NY. You may be surprised that you can afford to quilt it. If it's the cost of batting and backing you can use a blanket you may have around the house and another spare sheet. Either can be cut down to size if need be. You don't state how large the quilt is. If you don't have a quilt frame, it's easy to make your own with DH's help.
