I look with admiration at the scrap quilts on the board but I always wonder how do you know what to make out of the scraps. I can only make a quilt from a pattern, I guess because I am pretty much self and internet taught. If you have scraps and I do, and I cut those scraps into pieces how will I know that I will have enough for a certain project?
It's called "making it up as you go along"...Sometimes I'll just pull scraps in a color wave, put likes together in panels, use borders around panels to put together & just go for it! That's what I did with that last one. I had some 1/2 sq triangles, put them together, used charms to finish the quilt. See the border piece I had to use around the center to make the charms fit around it? Just grab your scraps & start. Mostly I make 2 quilts at once, as I use the leader/ender method as I sew. Before you know it, you have 2 quilts! I'm working on Judy's MT#12 right now & the leader/ender quilt is one of the kits I cut out so it will be finished right along Judy's. That one will be donated & I am keeping Judy's for a future great grandchild cuz it's so different. Gotta put some of our work away for the "future's" just in case can no longer quilt. Getting up there in age!
