The pieces were foundation-pieced, then I embroidered each square separately before jointing them into the quilt. I started with 10.5 inch squares but with fraying, the squares had to be cut to 9.75.
I tried not to embroider into the seam area since I was concerned about it getting bulky at the seams.

All the embroidery was hand done. I tried to repeat colors and patterns to give a sense of continuity to the whole thing.
The tying was done with as small a stitch as possible to avoid it taking over against the embroidery. That's partly why I did so much tying - I did not want there to be stress on too few ties.
