I decided for an island but against a sink in it. It is a large slab of plain granite in the middle of the kitchen and it is the gathering place. We use our island to make things on for baking and or chopping. We also stage our meals on the island and people serve themselves off of the island by walking by it. It is super easy to clean and wipe up. There is nothing sticking up or out of the island and nothing to obstruct the view. I originally wanted a bakers table and this has well filled the need plus it has enclosed storage and electrical outlets incase I want to use the kitchen aid mixer, slow cooker or rice cooker on the island. Oh my kitchen is very large. If I had no island it would be odd. If a cook top or sink would be there in my house it would end up being a big mess in the middle of the kitchen, kind of an unwanted center piece.
