I like square wall quilts, but rectangle lap and bed quilts. For lap quilts in particular I want them long enough to cover up with on the couch, but if they are too wide they tend to fall off the couch and uncover me or there is just too much bulk at the back of the couch. Just my preference. However, I have put on a few pounds in my later years so I need quilts a little wider than I used to
