I started buying fabric on sale and at thrift stores to build my stash. I wish I hadn't now. Now I buy what I need for a quilt and cut up the leftovers. I have learned that I prefer certain fabrics and patterns and bright colors and love some of the new stuff. Now I'm going to get rid of the stuff I don't use, purge my stash. You do not need a large stash to be a quilter.
I am so with you on this. My stash has reached silly proportions. I am about to hold a "fabric sale" to off load some of it. I also prefer to work with brighter colors.
