It depends on the size and type of the ruler you are using. You want a stable surface so when you hold the ruler against the foot it doesn't wiggle or tip. I have no trouble using a smaller ruler on my regular acrylic table around my machine. I work on a regular sewing machine so I couldn't use long or large rulers anyways due to the machine harp restrictions.
