Thank all of you for the enthusiastic and helpful way that you responded. I watched the you-tube videos that Prism99 tagged for us, but I'm afraid that I hate the sound of cutting the plastic foam, although it was neat to see that there are cheaper solutions. I did notice that covering so much of the table with the foam seemed to give a lot of room for future quilting, so I think that I'll bite the bullet as Dolphyngyrl suggested and buy the larger size of Sew-Steady surface.
