And if you do, try an Olfa cutting mat, the one that's green on both sides; it really does make a difference.

Also, check the angle of your hand when cutting. I often seen classes where students do not have the angle correct and they end up 'cutting' on half the guard instead of the blade. Since I have begun to cut while seated the past few years, I catch myself doing this more often, too.
