I have used hair spray. Spray it well and let sit a few minutes. You might have to do a repeat, but it works.
This works well on smooth surfaces. Maybe use the toothbrush if the surface is rough. On my Tupperware I found at a thrift sale, the black came off, but left a yellow shadow. I can live with that.
If all else fails, I would do the paint thing.
