Welcome from Minnesota, Dan. Don't worry about a stash. I buy only for specific projects, and a "stash" will just happen. Two things that I wish I had known when I started. Be sure you mark your machine so you can maintain an accurate scant quarter-inch seam. Trim your blocks to the proper size as you go. Other than that, and all the wonderful advice posted here, just jump in and have fun.
