Default Ideas for reasonably complex quilt

I want to tackle something a little challenging. I thought, New York Beauty. However, I'm not a fan of paper piecing. It's too wasteful. Maybe I could hand-piece the points.

Any ideas for quilts that reasonably complicated looking, but don't use wasteful techniques? oh, and aren't applique-based, LOL.

I look on Pinterest, but I have yet to see anything that fulfills this criteria. I'm probably just not looking hard enough, LOL.

I see LaPa but I want to wait until the book becomes more widely available in the US.

I know this is a tough question. I'm just trying to get some brainstorming ideas. And I probably need to attend some shows for ideas too. Just no chance to do it.

What haven't I thought of?

Thanks.
