I do this too. It works very well for me. Let me go take a picture, as I am very pleased with the way it looks. Currently I have a quilt that is really a lap size on top of the queen sized bed in my spare room, a room that was my son's until he recently moved out. I switch out the quilts all the time. It is just a bed spread under the quilt, and it isn't really fancy, but I like it. (He left a book case that he didn't have room for...works well for some of my quilts too.
)
The idea might work well for you too.
