I have not used one in quilting but I did use 4 old ones this year to stand against the fence and plant a tomato plant in each. The tomato's are growing great and when they are finished producing, I can dump the soil into my raised garden bed.
I made sure to cut a few slits in the bottom of the bag to allow excess water to drain out.
