Your idea of adding more rings to loop the existing rings together may work. Each row could be a long bug... the end circle being the face, then fill in the bug body with more rings. Add legs and you may have an awesome bug or with no legs an inchworm.
Alternate each row with the bug face going in different directions.
I really like the green color I see in the tiny leaf I see in the upper left corner of your photo if you need to add another color.
