It depends on the look you want and how you plan to sash (or not sash) and the quilting design you want to use. I like any where from 1-1/2 to 2 inches around my blocks. You might look at pictures of Dresden Plates that have different arrangement also. There are patterns that go in rows with no sashing and using 1/2 plates, there are arrangement that do fans.....
