I found that if you leave them laying around flat on the cutting table or near your machine they don't work so well. I store mine with the "writing" end down in a jar (I use an old mason jar as a pen/pencil holder).
Also the "really fine point tip" doesn't work as well as the regular tipped ones. My fine point tipped sharpie is the same way.
